How to Secure the GEF Small Grants Programme Green Economy Grant in Nigeria

The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme, opened its 2026 funding cycle for Nigerian organisations. This program allocates direct grant awards up to USD $50,000 for climate change mitigation, circular economy deployment, and land degradation restoration.

Civil society organisations, non-governmental organisations, and community-based groups across Nigeria can access these funds. The current call allocates funding to projects in six geopolitical zones, with specific priorities set for coastal restoration in Akwa Ibom State, renewable energy access in off-grid communities, and agricultural waste processing in the Middle Belt.

I have spent 16 years running green economy initiatives and civic technology projects from Uyo. I watched scores of promising Nigerian green applicants fail at the preliminary screening stage of the GEF Small Grants Programme Nigeria green economy grant. They failed not because their ideas lacked merit, but because their proposals violated non-negotiable compliance rules.
