The Quarter-Two Financial Gap in Nigeria's Power Sector
Nigeria's power sector faced severe financial liquidity stress between April and June 2026, as electricity distribution utilities recorded a collection deficit of N141.03 billion. Official performance figures from the regulator show that out of N744.67 billion billed to electricity consumers, the eleven distribution companies collected N603.64 billion. This resulted in an 81.06 percent collection efficiency rate.
The financial bleed extends beyond uncollected bills. Wholesale market data demonstrates that distribution companies took delivery of 6,982.32 gigawatt-hours of power valued at N946.57 billion at trading points, but only managed to bill end-users for 5,812.31 gigawatt-hours, worth N744.67 billion. This gap represents a billing efficiency rate of 78.67 percent and an energy accounting efficiency of 83.24 percent.
