What is a Green Job? And Why Akwa Ibom Needs Thousands of Them

What the International Labour Organisation actually says

The ILO defines a green job as decent work that contributes to preserving or restoring the environment — whether in traditional sectors like manufacturing and construction, or in newer green sectors like renewable energy and energy efficiency. It must be productive, deliver a fair income, provide security in the workplace, and offer prospects for personal development.

That definition matters because it rules out two things people confuse for green jobs: unpaid volunteering, and any job in a "green" company that pays poverty wages.

• Solar PV Technician — installs and maintains rooftop and mini-grid systems (₦80k–₦250k/month)
• Waste Auditor — surveys facilities and designs waste-reduction plans (₦120k–₦400k/month)
• Agroecology Extension Officer — trains farmers in low-input, climate-smart practices
• Environmental Compliance Inspector — audits industrial sites for regulatory compliance
• Biogas Technician — builds and services household and community biogas digesters

Why 340,000 jobs are coming

Nigeria's Energy Transition Plan (ETP) targets net-zero by 2060 and projects the transition will create roughly 340,000 direct jobs by 2030 and up to 840,000 by 2060 — mostly in solar, hydro, and power infrastructure.

Why Akwa Ibom specifically

Akwa Ibom sits on 129 km of Atlantic coastline, has 4–6 peak sun hours daily, and one of the highest agricultural populations in the South-South. Coastal erosion, gas flaring legacy, and the state's ARISE agenda have all pushed green work up the state government's priority list. The Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources is actively convening stakeholders — that is why the roundtable that launched this platform happened in Uyo.
