Oportun: Senior Software Engineer (R14285)

Oportun is hiring a Remote Senior Software Engineer (R14285) to join its Engineering Ecosystem Organization. The team exists to help engineers deliver member value with high speed and high quality. In this role, you will design, build, and operate scalable platform services and shared libraries that improve developer productivity, system reliability, and delivery velocity. Success in your first year means delivering complex platform capabilities end-to-end, contributing to architecture decisions, and raising engineering quality through strong technical practices and mentorship.

Key Responsibilities:

- Design, build, test, deploy, and maintain scalable, reliable platform services and shared libraries.

- Contribute to platform and system architecture decisions with a focus on reliability, scalability, and developer experience.

- Write high-quality, maintainable code and model strong engineering best practices.

- Collaborate with Staff Engineers and peers to implement standards and patterns supporting Continuous Delivery.

- Identify and address performance, scalability, and reliability issues across platform services.

- Participate actively in design reviews, code reviews, and technical discussions.

- Drive operational excellence by improving monitoring, alerting, and incident response practices.

- Investigate root causes of production issues and implement long-term fixes to reduce on-call burden.

- Mentor and support junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, pairing, and technical guidance.

- Partner with cross-functional teams to understand requirements and deliver impactful solutions.

- Explore and thoughtfully integrate AI tools to work smarter and reduce manual work.

Qualifications & Requirements:

- 7–8 years of related software engineering experience with a bachelor's degree, or a master's degree with an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Demonstrated strong experience in software development focused on backend systems and services.

- Proficiency in Java, C#, C++, or similar backend languages, with strong knowledge of software design principles, data structures, and algorithms.

- Experience building and operating scalable, reliable, and secure systems, including 3+ years designing, building, deploying, and maintaining container-based applications.

- 4+ years of experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.

- Experience with Continuous Delivery practices and automated deployment pipelines.

- Strong problem-solving, debugging, communication, and mentorship skills.

- Working knowledge of secure development practices and security considerations in distributed systems.

Nice to Have:

- Experience in financial services or the fintech industry.

- Familiarity with shared platforms, distributed systems, developer productivity, or engineering ecosystem practices.

- Experience using AI tools such as ChatGPT or GitHub Copilot to enhance personal productivity.
