About this opportunity

The Jana Robeyst Trust Fund (JRTF) offers small grants to support early-career biologists carrying out research and conservation initiatives focused on endangered mammals in Sub-Saharan Africa. The fund responds to a common challenge faced by emerging researchers: accessing financial support for small-scale projects and field-based conservation activities.

By providing flexible funding for essential project expenses, the Jana Trust Fund helps early-career researchers turn promising ideas into practical research and conservation work that can contribute to the protection of endangered mammal species. Eligible applicants can apply for grants of up to €1,500 to support ongoing projects and pilot programmes that demonstrate clear research and conservation value.

Funding may cover travel costs to present the project at a conference, participation in relevant workshops or training programmes, and essential field equipment required to complete fieldwork. Research projects must demonstrate a practical benefit to conservation or address an identified conservation need. Uneligible costs include living expenses, salaries, thesis production costs, retrospective costs, fundraising costs, payment of debts, and standalone education or community workshop projects.

Who Can Apply

The funding programme is open to early-career biologists conducting research or conservation projects focused on endangered mammals in Sub-Saharan Africa. Applicants may be based anywhere in the world. Projects must be carried out in a country within Sub-Saharan Africa and have clear research and conservation value. Both successful and unsuccessful applicants may apply again 12 months after their previous submission.
