About this opportunity

The Climate Intervention Environmental Impact Fund (CIEIF) has opened its sixth grant round worldwide, offering up to USD 75,000 for innovative climate intervention research. The funding is designed to support the environmental and social analysis required before or alongside small-scale field testing of innovative climate technologies. CIEIF is particularly interested in projects that are approaching field testing and have the potential to scale toward meaningful global climate benefits.

The grant specifically helps applicants address environmental, social, and stakeholder-related issues associated with proposed climate intervention field tests. Applicants must demonstrate how the funding will be used primarily for at least one of three core areas: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), predictive impact modelling, or engagement with potentially affected stakeholders (including local communities and government agencies).

Eligible projects must involve innovative climate intervention technologies that are sufficiently developed for small-scale field testing. The funding opportunity excludes Direct Air Capture (DAC), Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), Stratospheric Solar Radiation Management (SRM), and general climate adaptation or clean energy projects. Selected grantees receive the first third of the grant upfront after scoping discussions, with remaining payments tied to project benchmarks. Successful grantees must agree to publish their field-test results in a peer-reviewed academic journal or externally peer-reviewed report.

Who Can Apply

Open to nonprofit organisations (including academic institutions), qualified research teams operating through eligible organisations, and private businesses developing eligible climate-intervention field tests. Individuals and student projects are not eligible to apply independently. International projects worldwide are eligible; projects outside the US may receive higher priority if partnered with a US nonprofit partner.

How to Apply

There is no standard application form. Applicants must prepare a grant request addressing a series of questions, including contact details, biosketches, detailed description of the proposed field test, previous research, potential scalability, required government permits, and identification of at least two independent consulting firms to assist with analysis. Contact the CIEIF manager before submitting to discuss delivery methods.
