About this opportunity

Khalifa University of Science and Technology, in partnership with UNESCO and the Youth4Water initiative, has launched the Khalifa University–UNESCO Global Water Hackathon 2026. This international research and innovation competition is designed to empower university students to develop practical, science-based solutions to some of the world's most urgent water challenges.

Led by Khalifa University's Center for Membranes and Advanced Water Technology (CMAT), the initiative brings together university students, researchers, academic advisers, industry experts, and policymakers. Unlike conventional short-format hackathons, this program provides a comprehensive research and development process where participating teams frame real-world problems, conduct research, develop solutions, receive technical guidance, validate concepts, and assess potential impact.

The program supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) and features six core challenge themes aligned with UN Water pillars:

1. Water Security and Sustainable Desalination

2. Water Reuse, Circularity and Resource Efficiency

3. Smart, Digital and AI-Enabled Water Systems

4. Water Quality, Health and Environmental Protection

5. Climate Resilience and Environmental Management

6. Water Governance, Policy and Social Impact

The initiative will culminate in an international showcase and awards ceremony in Abu Dhabi during the 2026 UN Water Conference in December 2026.
