BiodivFuture 2026–2027 Joint Call: Funding for Transnational Biodiversity Research and Novel Ecosystems

The BiodivFuture 2026–2027 Joint Call is open for transnational research and innovation projects addressing biodiversity, novel ecosystems, and their socio-ecological consequences. The initiative is launched by Biodiversa+, with funding from more than 30 organisations across 25 participating countries, together with the European Commission.

The call supports future-oriented research examining how human-driven environmental changes reshape ecosystems, the pathways through which novel ecosystems emerge, and the implications of these transformations for biodiversity and society across terrestrial, freshwater, marine, and coastal environments globally.

Proposals may address one or more of three research themes:

- Theme A: Novel Ecosystem Functioning - Understanding how novel ecosystems function and how ecological processes interact with socio-cultural and socio-economic dynamics.

- Theme B: Pathways to Novel Ecosystems - Examining pathways and plausible future trajectories through which novel ecosystems emerge.

- Theme C: Biodiversity Benefits and Equity - Addressing the fair and equitable sharing of biodiversity benefits in the context of novel ecosystems.

Projects are expected to demonstrate clear transnational added value, employ interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches, and involve non-academic stakeholders in the co-production of actionable knowledge to support the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
